Commentary
One of the focal points of the hall is the impressive late 15th c. stained glass window commemorating Henry VI and his lineage at the high end. The kings of England depicted, chronologically, are Constantine, Arthur, William I, Richard I, Henry III, Edward III, Henry IV, Henry V and Henry VI.

Commentary
Coats of arms remaining in the tracery lights of the N window include those for the city of London, Coventry, Earls of Hereford, Earls of Chester, King Ethelred, King Alfred, Edward III, Henry VI, kings of East Anglia, Constantine, Duke of Aquitaine, Duke of Normandy, Earl of Lancaster, Earl of Cornwall, King Alfred's cross, Leofric, kings of Man and the city of York.

Commentary
The splendid oak mayor's chair, now in the old council chamber, dates from ca. 1450. It was formerly variously placed in the hall.

The elephant and castle from the city arms is raised on the right hand side of the back, with 2 lions formerly supporting a crown on the left.
The Virgin and child are carved on the left arm of the chair.

Commentary
10 angel musicians, much restored, spring from the roof trusses of the hall. Their instruments include the crwth, trumpet, cittern, harp and bass recorder.

The angel shown here is playing a cittern.

The handsome 13th c. arched entrance door at the E end of the palace leads into remodelled rooms where the former great hall was located to the left. The original service wing to the right of the entrance has been demolished.
