Description / History (pre-1642)

The magnificent aisled hall was 8 bays long, with pillars made up of clusters of nine slender shafts of Purbeck marble set on large diamond-shaped bases. The dais was at the E end in front of a wall which contained 'two niches, adorned with pillars and canopies of Petworth marble, still maintaining the appearance of grandeur...' (Gostling, Canterbury 116).
