Description / History (pre-1642)

The 4-bay former banqueting hall is on the upper storey at the front end of the building. A large 5-light window with perpendicular tracery and some medieval glass remains at the W end overlooking the street. A niche with a carved canopy in the centre of the facade once held a statue of the Virgin, patron saint of the medieval guild of St Mary.

Considerable renovation was done in the 18th c. New windows, the 2 fireplaces in the N wall, panelling, entrance doors and minstrels' gallery are all Georgian additions. There are now 2 windows on the N wall and 4 on the S wall.

The lower kitchen was at the rear end of the ground floor but an 'over kitchen' and buttery lay at the rear of the upper storey beyond the council chamber in the centre.
