The Assembly Chamber in the W range of the guildhall on the upper floor was designed for meetings of the medieval council of over 100 members. The little solar behind the dais was used for the inner council of aldermen after the collapse of the Mayor's Court (or Free Chamber) roof from 1511--37 (Dunn & Sutermeister, Guildhall 6).

In the 18th c. a floor was added below the roof as an extension of the Upper Solar to expand the space for storage of the city arms. The present ceiling (ca. 25' high) is probably a Victorian reconstruction of the original low-pitched wooden structure. The panelling is not original.

The approximate measurements given are of the space in its current form.
