Hall

Guildhall

Description / History (pre-1642)

The present red brescia stone hall dates from the later 15th c. although surviving accounts do not allow precise dating (Blaylock, 'Exeter Guildhall' 129--34).

Original entry was directly from the street through a main door in a stone wall. The wall partly survives to the E of the present entrance though a staircase to the upper floor has been added. The wall on the W side was removed in the 19th c.

There were stone benches along the walls in the medieval hall for court meetings.
