Palmers' Guildhall

Guildhall
Performance Space: Hall
Width: 24.75' Length: 33'
Built: 1410

The Palmers' Guildhall was a 3-bay aisled hall with a screens passage at the lower (S) end. The original entrance doorway was at the location of the present 18th c. door. Service rooms lay beyond the screens passage.

The original dimensions are difficult to determine because of adjustments to the ground plan (eg, a wall has been added at the N end). The length measurement includes the modern dais and the width is approximate: the W aisle is approximately 8'9" across, 9' between columns in the southern 2 bays.

Renovations

ca. 1768 Extensive renovations. Aisles raised when the panelling was added and a false wall inserted in the N end (approximately 18' deep). Original windows obliterated by later work.

Current Status

The hall is now used as a magistrates' court and the interior has been renovated accordingly.
