The entrance to the great hall on the upper floor of the E wing was at the top of an outside staircase (demolished mid-19th c.) in the courtyard. The Jacobean panelling may not have been installed in the early 17th c.
The height of the hall is 19' 6' according to VCH Lanc 7.11.
A Victorian extension in 1857 to the N added an additional 20' to its dimensions, increasing the total length to 90'.
