Succeeded in minority; ward of Lord Burghley; lands held in trust by Lord Howard of Effingham. Imprisoned (for participation in the Earl of Essex's rebellion) in the Tower of London 8 Feb. 1600/1--April 1603; attainted and all honors forfeited 19 Feb. 1600/1; granted pardon and restitution 16 May 1603; restored in blood 18 April 1604. Arrested for opposition to the Duke of Buckingham and committed into the custody of John Williams, Lord Keeper and Dean of Westminster 15 June 1621--18 July 1621; subsequently under restraint at Titchfield in the custody of Sir William Pankhurst until 1 Sept. 1621
