Charles had, from 1354 onwards, developed relations with the English as part of his opposition to the Valois monarchy. Arrested and imprisoned by Jean II, King of France April 1356; freed from prison Nov. 1357; defeated by the French army 1364; received from Richard II a safe-conduct to come to England in 1383 but probably never used it
