Notes

Notes:

Players named William Bee, Alexander Foster, Joseph Moore, John Townsend, and Francis Wambus. The city read to them 27 May 1623 letters from the Privy Council which authorised and required the mayor and JPs not to suffer any players to show or exercise any plays within the city or its liberties. Wambus replied that the King's command overruled the Council's and that the troupe would play. On 26 April, the troupe advertised that they (as the Princess' Servants) would perform 'The Spanish Contract' at the White Horse Inn. Wambus was called before the mayor, and, refusing an order not to perform, was imprisoned until he could find sureties for his appearance at the next sessions of the peace. On 26 May Wambus and Bee were discharged. They appeared at the Mayors' Court on 18 and 25 September 1624 seeking compensation for the wrongs done to them, but none was given (pp 181--3)
