Nicholas Hanson presented a licence signed by the King. The city read to him 27 May 1623 letters from the Privy Council which authorised and required the mayor and JPs not to suffer any players to show or exercise any plays within the city or its liberties (p 180), but Hanson replied he would play unless he saw a letter signed by the King to the contrary
