Notes
Examination of James Wharton of East Winch, Norfolk, Lord Russell's minstrel, concerning 'certain unfitting songs irreverently sung' against Catholicism by Wharton's apprentices Ralph Green and Robert Marche. Wharton was in posession of a 'very lewd and evil song' (by William Mason?) which he said neither he nor his apprentices had sung openly, and which he said was given him by a minstrel/harper named Robert Gold at Mr Castleton's house at the sign of the Wastell. Gold was on 9 June 1554 set on and his ear nailed to the pillory 'for devising of unfitting songs against the Queen's Majesty' (p 34). Record continues on p 35
