Overview

Located at the foot of Westwell Downs a few miles N of Ashford, Westwell Manor belonged to the Priory of Christ Church, Canterbury. Nothing has been discovered about a medieval prior's house, if indeed there was one.

Performance History

Christ Church Priory Treasurers' Account record a payment for the King's Entertainers at Westwell in 1372--3.

Not extant.

History of the Venue

13th c. Manor confirmed as a possession of the prior of Christ Church.

1540 Surrendered to the Crown at the Dissolution.

1542--3 Granted to Archbishop Cranmer.

1560--1 Annexed by the Crown in exchange for other estates.

1567--8 Manor granted to John Fletcher and William Atkinson.

ca. 1629 Acquired by Sir John Tufton of Hothfield and his successors, the Earls of Thanet.
