Current Status

Partial ruin, partial reconstruction. Open to the public. Oldest surviving parts are the chapel (C12), and NE gateway (early C14), the rest is C15 or later.

History of the Venue

1265 - ownership passes from the Ferrers to the Earls of Lancaster. Continues to belong to the Duchy to this date.

1442-50 - South Tower is built. Two towers, side by side with a staircase projection between towards bailey.

1450s - The North Tower is built.

1631-5 - Kings Lodgings built on the South wall.

1760 - Folly Keep constructed
