This late 15th/early 16th c. misericord on the Bishop of Hulme's stall in the S side of the choir in Manchester Collegiate Church was added during the wardenship of James Stanley, the 10th Earl of Derby's brother. The traditional elephant and castle motif has a special feature here: the castle on the elephant's back is probably Lathom with the gatehouse and high curtain wall surrounding in the foreground (Lewis, 'Lathom House' 156--7).
