Nothing has been discovered about the original town hall.

Performance History

A probable venue for touring troupes performing for the mayor. In 1601--2 the town forbade performances in the council house or town hall.

Current Status

Destroyed.

History of the Venue

mid-17th c. Many civic buildings destroyed by fire when the central part of town was burnt during the Civil War.

1652 The present guildhall was built on a new site in the middle of the High Street
