Overview

Located on lowlying ground along the Little Stour 5 miles E of Canterbury on the main road to Sandwich, Ickham Manor belonged to the Priory of Christ Church, Canterbury.

Little has been discovered about the prior's manor house and its ultimate fate remains obscure.

Performance History

There is a payment in the Christ Church Priory accounts for an appearance by the king's minstrel(s) at Ickham in the mid-15th c.

History of the Venue

11th c. The manor of Ickham given to the Priory of Christ Church, Canterbury.

ca. 1400 Prior Chillenden reconstructed most of the manor buildings.

ca. 1480 Prior Sellinge renovated the prior's chamber and built a dormitory range. Subsequently the manor was leased.

1540 After the Dissolution ownership of the manor was transferred to the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury Cathedral.
