Description / History (pre-1642)

Late 18th c renovations covered most of the original hall, but a 20th c restoration prior to the building’s demolition uncovered some of the features as they existed in the late 16th c.  The hall had a wooden ceiling composed of oak tie-beams.  The W side contained a mullioned window, 6 lights wide by four high.  The S side contained 3 windows consisting of 2 tiers of 4 lights, with the upper ones trefoil-headed.  A fireplace was located between the second and third windows.  The opposite wall likely contained similar windows.  On the W end of the S side stood another large window with a low windowsill, which was likely used to help light the solar block that was added to the hall in the late 16th c, as well as several stone arched doorways leading to stairs, the solar, and chambers.
