Tavern

Site Name: Gullet Tavern
Location: Shrewsbury
County: Shropshire
Location Type: Town - in town at determined location

Overview

The tavern is long gone but the location is recalled in Gullet Passage, a narrow lane leading off the Shrewsbury Market Square on the W side of the market hall. At the end of the lane is the rear end of the black and white timbered Hole in the Wall pub (1863), a narrow but high (4 storey) inn, which maintains the association of the site with hospitality and ale. The front end faces Mardol Head where it becomes Shoplatch at the centre of town. The buildings along the passage are 18th or 19th c.
