Crowle Manor House

Venue Type & Location

Private Residence

Overview

The manor was a moated house which
included a chapel, a grange or tithe-barn and a pigeon house. It contained nineteen beds, four of which were found in the gatehouse.

Performance History

The manor was owned by Worcester Cathedral Priory, and was one of the venues (along with Grimley and Battenhall) where Prior William More paid for entertainments. The house became the residence of Prior More after the Priory was dissolved in 1538 until his death.

Current Status

Now called Crowle Court Farm. The only extant building on the site is a large barn (probably the original tithe-barn), which has been converted into a row of modern houses.

History of the Venue

13th c. Manor house built.

15th c. House rebuilt on the old foundations.

1864 or 1865 House largely demolished.

1868 A portion of the manor house remained and was being converted into a cider-house. The moat was still in existence and the gardens were traceable.

The remains of a small stone building which was possibly the kitchen of the manor house still remained in 1968.
