Venue Type & Location

Private Residence

Site Name: Copplestone House
Location: Copplestone
County: Devon
Location Type: Countryside - at uncertain location

Overview

The site of the Copplestones' medieval house was in wooded hills near the main road from Exeter to Barnstaple. Its 18th c. successor is located nearby, but not on the original site.

Performance History

A probable performance venue. No Copplestone household records survive but entertainers under the family's patronage performed elsewhere in Devon in the 15th c. It is likely that they also performed at home for their patrons.

Current Status

The original house does not survive and its precise location is now obscure. The 18th c. house remains in private ownership.

History of the Venue

13th c. Acquired by the Copplestone family.

1631/2 Copplestone passes to Elizabeth and Gertrude, sisters of John Copplestone.

ca. 1659 Sold to Sir John Yonge by the Copplestone co-heiresses.

1787 Purchased by Robert Madge. House rebuilt on a new site not far from the original, probably incorporating some fabric from the older house.
