Overview

Located on the N side of Half Moon Street, just SE of the abbey church.

A long 2-storey building, the ground floor of which was divided into 4 shops, rented out by the churchwardens.

Performance History

Rented by the churchwardens to troupes of actors on 12 different occasions.

A row of private shops.

History of the Venue

Built by the Sherborne churchwardens, 1533-4. The 2nd-storey comprised a single room, 116 x 19 feet, and was used for parish purposes

In 1693 the lease was taken over by the Masters and Brethren of the Almshouses and in 1701 the whole building was converted into 3 tenements; separate shops, at which time the 2nd storey was subdivided to accommodate the tenants and a 3rd storey attic was added.
