Overview

Located in hills on the W side of the Exe Valley, a few miles SW of a principal Courtenay residence at Tiverton.

Little is known of the medieval castle at Cadeleigh.

Performance History

A possible performance venue. Relevant household records do not survive but entertainers belonging to the Sir Anthony Kingston appeared elsewhere in the SW in the mid-16th c.

Current Status

Long demolished. Exact site uncertain.

History of the Venue

by 1328 Manor acquired by the Courtenays, Earls of Devon. It passed to a younger branch, the Courtenays of Powderham.

ca. 1535 The widow of Sir William Courtenay of Powderham adopted Cadeleigh as her residence with 2nd husband, Sir Anthony Kingston.

1552 Kingston estranged from his wife and may have relocated.

late 16th c. Sold to Sir John Horton.

ca 1609--15 Sold to Sir Simon Leach of Crediton whose family held the estate for several generations.

17th c. A new house, eventually known as Cadeleigh Court, was built on an unknown site. 17th and 18th c. farm buildings remain on the estate.
