Overview

Of medieval origins, little is known about the manor house of the Fane family located SW of Maidstone.

Now an L-shaped building that has undergone various changes and additions over later centuries. A Perpendicular stone doorway in the N wing remains from the medieval period.

Performance History

Possible performance location. There is a late 16th c. payment record to a trumpeter patronized by Sir Thomas Fane at Rye.

Privately owned and not open to the public.

History of the Venue

by mid-13th c. The manor was held by the de Burston family.

early 16th c. Alderman Head of London lived in the house for a period and made additions (now gone).

late 16th c. Alienated to Sir Thomas Fane.

1607 Inherited by Fane's nephew Sir George Fane.

late 17th c. S facade in red and blue chequer brick added.

1762 Willed to Thomas, Lord Le Despencer

21st c. Owned by George Boscawen, 9th Viscount Falmouth.
