Overview

The original house (or houses) of the Sheldon family -- called at various periods Balsford, Bamford and Beoley Hall -- does not survive. The later house may be on or near the site of the original hall.

Performance History

William took up residence at Beoley after his father Ralph's death in 1546.

Current Status

The hall no longer exists.

History of the Venue

late 15th c. William, son of John Sheldon of Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, established himself at Balsford Hall in Beoley. Balsford Hall was inherited by his brother Ralph.

1549 William Sheldon, son of Ralph, purchased Beoley Manor from John Nevill, 4th Baron Latimer.

1640s William Sheldon's house was said to have been burnt down during the Civil War in order to prevent it from falling into the hands of Parliamentary forces. William's estates were sequestered.

1653 Estates discharged from sequestration and returned to the Sheldon family.

late 17th--early 18th c. Hall rebuilt.

1788 Ralph Sheldon sold the hall and manor to Thomas Holmes.

1791 E wing partly rebuilt by John Sanders.

late 18th--19th c. Hall passed through a succession of owners.
