Width: 29.5' Length: 65.5'
Built: 1294 Demolished: 17xx

Partial excavations of the area make it possible to reconstruct the ground plan of the hall. Its dimensions are estimated to have been as large as 29.5' by 65.5'.

From the excavations completed to date, 3 of the 4 walls have been found. It is likely that the 4th wall is under the existing house or driveway and has therefore not been excavated. The walls are of crude rubble 2.75' thick.

To the S of the fireplace the line of a beam suggests the existence of a timber frame wall subdividing the hall possibly inserted at a later date. The division line might represent the typical screen separating the hall proper from the kitchen, pantry and buttery. Certainly the 1587 Leicester survey lists these rooms as being in the 'old' building (Warrington Library: MS 1174).

Current Status

Nothing remains of the medieval hall above the ground.
