Players (which included Nicholas Long and Joseph Moore) came to the mayor's court and told civic officials they 'came not to ask leave to play but to ask the gratuity of the city.' A document of 21 March 1613/14 (p 141) reports that this troupe attempted to play without leave and caused disturbances. As a result, civic officials decided that that a law of 10 February 1588/9 (see p 91), which prohibited citizens from going to stage plays and interludes, should now be enforced
