Ruins, only the shell of the ground floor remains. Open to public except restricted area designated as unsafe.

History of the Venue

1348 - licence to crenellate, the remains which survive to date are built by Ralph de Stafford.

 

1643 - orders given for demolition of castle

1817 - reconstruction undertaken by Sir George Jerningham (later Lord Stafford) with a view to create a Gothic mansion. Only two towers completed, larger rooms made habitable. Lancet windows of two lights, gallery along the long walls, elevated dais. [Pevsner]
