Overview

Little is known of the first dean's house built in the mid-16th c. on the site of the former chapel of St Thomas located in the abbey precinct. The late 18th c. bishop's house on the NE corner of Abbey Square was built on the same site.

Performance History

The Earl of Essex's players visited to perform in the dean's house in 1583 but were apparently disappointed, though they received a payment.

Current Status

Demolished.

History of the Venue

ca. 1573 Dean's house of wattle and daub with a thatched roof mentioned in Dean and Chapter accounts (Burne, Chester Cathedral 51).

ca. 1661 House renovated by Henry Bridgeman (Burne, Chester Cathedral 130).

1764 Dean's house relocated to Abbey Street.
