Overview

Located near a main route through the beautiful Lune Valley on a moated mound surrounded by forest and farmland.

A handsome Victorian reconstruction of the medieval castle, now converted to luxury apartments.

Performance History

Although no relevant family records survive, there is evidence elsewhere that the Tunstall family patronized touring entertainers who may also have performed at home in the 15th c.

History of the Venue

1402 Sir Thomas Tunstall received licence to crenellate.

1605 Francis Tunstall sold to John Girlington.

1619 Nicholas Tunstall mortgaged Thurland.

1643 Castle surrendered to parliamentary forces following a siege and ruined.

1809--10 Ruins repaired.

1826--9 Additions made, including a new drawing room.

1876 Early 19th c. work mostly destroyed by fire.

1879--88 Castle restored by Paley & Austin in Gothic and Elizabethan style.

200x Converted to luxury apartments by local developers.
