Info:Henry Box Brown was an African American abolitionist speaker and showman, who later took up a career as a mesmerist and conjuror.
Brown was born into slaver but on March 23, 1849 escaped to freedom by famously having himself mailed in a wooden crate to abolitionists in Philadelphia. Thus inspiring his nickname.
After arrival in Philadelphia, Brown became a well-known speaker for the Anti-Slavery Society and an author with the publication of his autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Henry Box Brown (1849).
Brown exhibited a moving panorama titled "Mirror of Slavery" across the northeastern states until he was forced to move to England after the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850.
Brown toured Britain with his antislavery panorama for the next 10 years. Which was followed by a long career in show business.
