Tavern

Overview

  • Alternate Names: possibly Mrs. Liffen’s Hall

  • Audience Composition: Mrs. Liffen’s is described as one of a number of rooms in Aberdeen that were particularly popular with young, business men.

  • Performance Space Description: Contemporary accounts suggest that Liffen’s was similar in character to a London supper club. Maloney quotes one author who notes that “Liffens was ‘quite an an after-business resort’ which boasted ‘the best native oysters from the London markets’.” (30)

  • Typical Fare: An evening at Liffens usually involved performances by a variety of singers and musicians. Maloney suggests that favourite acts included Sam Cowell, W.G. Ross, tavern singer Charles Sloman, and “the banjo player little Barlow” (30).
