Pleasure Gardens

Site Name: Vauxhall Gardens
Location: London
County: London (city-county)
Location Type: Town - in town at determined location

Overview

  • Address: Lambeth (area currently bounded by Kennington Lane, St. Oswald’s Place, Leopold Walk, Vauxhall Walk & Goding St.) For a current map, Click Here. For historical maps showing the venue (in addition to the one excerpted at right), Click Here, Here, and Here.

  • Alternate Names: New Spring Gardens (opening-1785), Royal Gardens, Vauxhall.

  • Capacity: The gardens could house massive crowds. By many accounts, audiences frequently numbered in the tens of thousands

  • Audience Composition: The typical Vauxhall audience included a wide range of spectators - male & female, young and old, working class & aristocratic (along with a fair share of prostitutes & ruffians, especially in the late 18th Century).

  • Performance Space Description: Prominent features of the gardens as a whole included illuminated, tree-lined walks, a raised orchestra, supper rooms and a space for dancing. For a range of contemporary descriptions, click here (Dictionary of Victorian London Online). The majority of performances listed in this database, however, took place in the Rotunda theatre, a stucco building designed by George Michael Mose, and erected c. 1742. This circular building was elaborately decorated in the rococo style and stretched approximately 70 feet in diameter. Performances took place in the centre of the circle, underneath the massive chandelier.

  • Typical Fare: Vauxhall usually boasted a wide variety of entertainments. On a given evening, patrons might witness singers, clowns, equestrian acts, balloon ascents and fireworks displays. They might also dine, promenade, or participate in the dancing that usually ended an evening's entertainment. For lists of performers who appeared at the Gardens, see David Coke’s Vauxhall site

  • Performance History

  • The gardens were auctioned off and closed between 1842 & 1844.

  • Between 1845 and 1852, Vauxhall was typically open on Monday-Friday evenings throughout the summer months (usually May-September).

  • The gardens closed permanently on July 25, 1859.
