Events pertaining to other non-European ethnicities that were recorded in The Sheffield Iris, The Brighton Herald and The Bristol Mercury in 1842. Some references also come from documents found in the British Library, the Lambeth Public Archives, the University of Bristol Theatre Collection, The Portsmouth Public Library and the Liverpool Record Office and Local History Library:
- January 20: The entertainments at the Theatre Royal, Portsmouth include a Tableaux Vivant featuring an “Indian Woman” and a “Grand Eastern Spectacle…called the 40 Thieves!”
- c. February 28-March 5: Several performances of both ‘Mary White’ and ‘Susan Hopley’ at the Royal Victoria Theatre, London.
- c. March 7-12: ‘Mary White’ is again on the bill at the Royal Victoria Theatre, London.
- March 3-12: The “Wizard” Pennington performs at the Crown Assembly Rooms (Portsmouth) on March 3-8, 1842. Tricks include “The Peruvian Sacrifice“ and “The Ball of Abdallah.”
- March 28-April 9: Performances of ‘Aladdin; Or, The Wonderful Lamp’ at the Victoria Theatre, London.
- March 28-April 12: Entertainments at the Theatre Royal, Bristol include a farce called ‘Cariboo, or the Prude’.
- April 18: ‘Ella Rosenberg’ is amongst the pieces performed at the Theatre Royal, Sheffield.
- May 11: ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ is performed at the Theatre Royal, Sheffield.
- c. May 23-28: Acts (at various venues) during the Sheffield Fair include “The Battle of Waterloo and the War in China” and “The Museum and Panorama of Damascus”.
- c. July 11-16: ‘The Dream Spectre; Or, The Legend of the Sleeper’s Shrift’, ‘The Kingdom of Women Or, The Revolt of the Seraglio on the Other Side of the Pole’ and ‘The Seventh Victim! Or, the Murder at ‘The Dog & Duck’ are all frequently on the bill at the Victoria Theatre, London.
- July 26, 30: Mr. Osbaldiston appears as Shylock in ‘The Merchant of Venice’ at the Royal Victoria Theatre, London.
- August 15-19: “Madlle. Susanne and Young C. Adams” appear nightly in an Equestrian act entitled “The Voltigeurs of Kathay! Or, the Brothers of Canton” at Vauxhall Gardens. “The Chinese Acrobats” are also on the bill.
- August 22-23: The entertainments at Vauxhall Gardens include “a new Characteristic Gymnastic Spectacle entitled The Fete of Canton” and “A Grand Equestrian Cavalcade … the Cavalry of Pekin, or, The Wild Tribe of Kathay” (each evening).
- August 24: The variety bill at the Royal Albert Saloon includes a “Chinese Extravaganza” and a “Comic Duet” called “Wandering Gipsies”
- September 15: Martha Willis. Or the Robber!! The Guard!! & the Gipsey is performed at the Queen’s Theatre, Manchester.
- October 17-25: Several performances of ‘Sarah, the Jewess’ at the Theatre Royal, Brighton.
- November 14: ‘The Merchant of Venice’ is performed at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle.
- December 15-16: Sig. Hervio Nano performs (at the Theatre Royal, Liverpool) in a piece called ‘The Gnome Fly,’ which takes place in the “mystic woods in the Suburbs of Lahore” and features characters called “Sidi and Zelima.”
