Overview

  • Address: St. Mary’s Gate (Near St. Mary’s Church), Nottingham. Click Here for Map.

  • Performance Space Description: In the 2nd edition of A Stranger’s Guide Through Nottingham (c. 1849) the Theatre Royal is described as “not at all remarkable” in terms of its “size and appointments” (95). Outside of this rather ambivalent description, little information about the performance space has yet been found.

  • Typical Fare: During the years covered by this database, the Theatre Royal produced several kinds of dramatic entertainment (including farces, melodramas, pantomimes and ‘legitimate’ works), and hosted well known performers such as Charles Kean. In addition to dramatic works, however, the theatre’s bills also frequently included, dancers, magicians, lecturers, etc.

  • Performance History

  • The original Theatre Royal was built in 1760, and enjoyed some popularity around the turn of the 19th Century. According to A Stranger’s Guide Through Nottingham (c. 1849), it was again “tolerably well attended” by the mid-1800s (95).

  • The circumstances surrounding the destruction of the theatre have not yet been discovered. In 1865, however, a new Theatre Royal was erected in the City Centre. This later building still stands today.
