  • Audience Composition: The Theatre Royal was noted for attracting much of Aberdeen’s elite until the 1830s, when it declined in popularity.



  • Typical Fare: According to the Aberdeen City Council, the main attraction at the theatre after 1818 was the production of Rob Roy. A commemorative plaque in Aberdeen suggests that Charles Macready and Charles Kean performed at the venue as well.
  • Performance History

  • The Theatre Royal was Aberdeen’s first permanent theatre building, built in 1795 by Stephen Kemble. Construction cost 3000 pounds (raised by subscription)



  • Shortly after the opening of a (much larger) venue called His Majesty’s Theatre and Opera House, the theatre grounds were sold to the Church of Scotland. The building was demolished in 1877.
