  • Audience Composition: In 1854, John Weale wrote that activities at the Hall were “chiefly supported by Jews” (536). This claim was repeated by Henry Mayhew in the early 1860s.



  • Performance Space Description: Little information has yet been found about this performance space. It seems to have been a fairly large venue, which contained “a circulating labrary [sic] and large reading rooms” (Weale 536).



  • Typical Fare: During the mid-19th Century, Sussex Hall was home to “The Jews’ and General Literary and Scientific Institution”. The building was largely known for hosting lectures and concerts.



  • Performance History

  • Information on the history of Sussex Hall has not yet been located. We do know that between 1861 and 1883 the building was home to City of London College.
