Venue Type & Location

Exhibition Hall

Overview

  • Address: Leadenhall Street, London. For a current map, Click Here. For an historical map showing the venue (in addition to the one excerpted at right), Click Here.

  • Audience Composition: In 1854, John Weale wrote that activities at the Hall were “chiefly supported by Jews” (536). This claim was repeated by Henry Mayhew in the early 1860s.

  • Performance Space Description: Little information has yet been found about this performance space. It seems to have been a fairly large venue, which contained “a circulating labrary [sic] and large reading rooms” (Weale 536).

  • Typical Fare: During the mid-19th Century, Sussex Hall was home to “The Jews’ and General Literary and Scientific Institution”. The building was largely known for hosting lectures and concerts.

  • Performance History

  • Information on the history of Sussex Hall has not yet been located. We do know that between 1861 and 1883 the building was home to City of London College.

Please see the 'Bibliographic Sources' link at right for a complete listing of materials (both primary and secondary) from which the above information was compiled.
