Overview

  • Conclusive information about this venue has not been located. It is possible, however, that the Hall in question is the Reading Town Hall, parts of which date back to 1786. Some basic information about the Town Hall can be found below.

  • Address: Blagrave Street, Reading. For a current map, Click Here.

  • Performance Space Description: Little information about the state of the Town Hall during the years covered by this database has been found. For descriptions and images of later instantiations of the venue, see The Reading Arts & Venues Site .

  • Performance History

  • At least one portion of the Town Hall (the area currently known as the Victoria Hall) was built in 1786. In 1864, this structure was rebuilt in order to house a large organ that had been presented to the town.

  • A newer building (designed by Alfred Waterhouse) was added to the perimeter of the Town Hall Complex in 1875. Further expansions were also completed in 1882, when a Concert Hall was constructed, and in 1897, when an Art Gallery was erected and attached to the Town Hall.

  • Despite incurring damage during WWII, the Town Hall stands to this day, and has received Grade II Listing Building status. It currently serves as a venue for “concerts, exhibitions, education workshops, [and] lectures”, and is home to the twelve galleries of the Reading Museum (Reading Arts & Venues Site).
