Review of Mr. Dean's acting capabilities in the Chroncile and Gazette:

"Mr. Dean's acting is always good. He suits himself in his look and manner exactly to what he represents, and there is a… truthfulness about his style, which shows him to be quite at home in the character he undertakes, and an accomplished actor. He is our favorite" (Chroncile and Gazette, 29 October, 1842, 3).

A review of Pierce:

"Pierce sings a good comic song, but is a most horrible twaddler otherwise. He looks sadly out of place on the stage, and the abominable yankee twang never leaves his tongue a moment…. If he would learn some very plain things he might perhaps become worthy of serious notice" (Chronicle and Gazette, 27 August, 1836, 3).
