Programme Notes
The following is a snippet of a notice copied from one of Mr. McCleary's previous performances in the Kingston Chronicle, so as to let readers know what they can expect:
"The performance consisted of Recitations and Songs- comic and sentimental- and closed with the rieciations of "PONTIAC'S APPEAL TO HIS WARRIORS," in the full costume of an Ottawa Indian Chief. The introductory recitations were delievered with spirit and effect; and the songs, particularly that of Cherry Cheek'd Patty and (Lovely Rose were exceedingly well done- indeed the latter- which was done in the character of a Southern Negro- was inimitable, and called forth shouts of applause from the whole audience. Pontiac's Appeal, in a splendid Indian dress, was delivered with emphasis and effect, and was laudably greeted by the auditory. Mr. McCleary is undoubtedly a performer of fine taste and of great versatility of talent…" (Kingston Chronicle, 23 October, 1830, 3).
