Notes
Mary Ann Shadd was an anti-slavery activist and teacher, as well as the first black female publisher in Canada. She was born in Delaware, but she eventually made her way to Windsor, Canada West, and then Chatham-Kent. She taught at the Princess Street School (Chatham), a school for black children. Her younger sister, Sarah Shadd would also teach there. Mary Ann Shadd published a pamphlet titled "Notes on Canada West" and also founded the "Provincial Freeman," a newspaper distributed throughout North America. She traveled widely, giving speeches and sermons, and additionally published out of Toronto. She married Thomas Cary and is sometimes referenced as Shadd Cary. Later in her life, she became the only black female recruiting officer for the Union Army and would also gain a law degree in Washington, DC.
