This image of the Ethiopian Serenaders is taken from a larger poster advertising the range of activities at Vauxhall Gardens in the summer of 1848, including fireworks, lion-tamers, acrobats, equestrians, and the pure pleasure of promenading. There is substantial information about the events during this important summer season at Vauxhall available on The Juba Project database, including programs for every week (from the Lambeth Archive in London), and entries in the database for all performances, including access to more reviews than for any other series of performances in this project. There are biographical and featured performer entries for three of the men pictured here, two of whom are also featured in other hyperdocuments.
There is much available, and more to learn. This hyperdocument will focus on what it might be able to tell us about the Troupe, its members, and their relationships
