As water rarified doth make<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> winds blow,
\n<\/span>So winds when rarified<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> do colder grow.
\n<\/span>For if they thin are<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> rarified, then they
\n<\/span>Do further blow, and spread out every way.
\n<\/span>So cold they are, and sharp as needle points,<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> 5
\n<\/span>For by the thinness breaks and disunites,<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\n<\/span>Into such<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> atoms fall, sharp figures be,<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\n<\/span>Which porous bodies pierce, if we could<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> see.
\n<\/span>Yet some will think, if air were parted so
\n<\/span>The winds could not have such strong force to blow. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span> 10
\n<\/span>\u2019Tis true, if atoms all were blunt and flat,<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\n<\/span>Or round like rings, they could not pierce, but pat.<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\n<\/span>But by dividing, they so sharp do grow,<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\n<\/span>That<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> through all porous bodies they do go.<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\n<\/span>But when the winds are soft, they intermix, \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span> 15
\n<\/span>As water doth, and in one body fix.
\n<\/span>They rather<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span> wave than blow as fans are spread,
\n<\/span>Which ladies use to cool their cheeks when red,
\n<\/span>Or like as water drops that disunite<\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\n<\/span>Feel harder than when mixed they<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span> on us light, \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span> 20
\n<\/span>Unless such streams upon our heads do<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span> run,
\n<\/span>As we a shelter seek, the wet to shun.
\n<\/span>But when a drop congeal\u00e8d is with cold,
\n<\/span>As hailstones are, then it more strength<\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span> doth hold.
\n<\/span>For<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span> flakes of snow may have more quantity \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>25
\n<\/span>Than hailstones, yet not have more<\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span> force thereby.
\n<\/span>They fall so soft that they scarce<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span> strike our touch;
\n<\/span>Hailstones we feel and know their weight too much.
\n<\/span>But figures that are flat are dull and slow,
\n<\/span>Make weak impressions<\/span>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span> wheresoe\u2019er they go. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> 30
\n<\/span>For let ten times the quantity of steel
\n<\/span>Be beaten thin,<\/span>23<\/sup><\/a><\/span> no hurt by that you\u2019ll feel.
\n<\/span>But if that one will take a needle small,
\n<\/span>Whose point is sharp, and prick<\/span>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span> the flesh withal,
\n<\/span>Straight it shall hurt, and put the flesh to pain, \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> 35
\n<\/span>Which greater strength doth not of what is<\/span>25<\/sup><\/a><\/span> plain.
\n<\/span>For though<\/span>26<\/sup><\/a><\/span> you press it hard against the skin,
\n<\/span>\u2019T may<\/span>27<\/sup><\/a><\/span> heavy feel, but cannot<\/span>28<\/sup><\/a><\/span> enter in.
\n<\/span>And so<\/span>29<\/sup><\/a><\/span> the wind that\u2019s thin and<\/span>30<\/sup><\/a><\/span> rarified
\n<\/span>May press<\/span>31<\/sup><\/a><\/span> us down, but never<\/span>32<\/sup><\/a><\/span> pierce the side. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span> 40
\n<\/span>Or take a blade that\u2019s flat, though strong and great,
\n<\/span>And with great strength upon one\u2019s head it<\/span>33<\/sup><\/a><\/span> beat:
\n<\/span>You\u2019ll break the skull, but not knock out his<\/span>34<\/sup><\/a><\/span> brains,
\n<\/span>Which arrows sharp soon do, and with less pains.
\n<\/span>Thus what is small is subtler and more<\/span>35<\/sup><\/a><\/span> quick, \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>\u00a045
\n<\/span>For all small points<\/span>36<\/sup><\/a><\/span> in porous bodies stick.
\n<\/span>Winds broken small to atoms, when they<\/span>37<\/sup><\/a><\/span> blow,
\n<\/span>Are colder much than when they<\/span>38<\/sup><\/a><\/span> streaming flow,
\n<\/span>For all which knit<\/span>39<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and united close<\/span>40<\/sup><\/a><\/span>

\n<\/span>This shows what\u2019s closest in itself<\/span>42<\/sup><\/a><\/span> to be,

\n<\/span>Take quantity, for quantity alike,
