Upon a grave outrageous Sorrow set,<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nDigging the earth, as if she through would get.
\nHer hair untied loose on her shoulders hung,
\nAnd every hair with tears, like beads, was strung,
\nAnd when those tears<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> did fall with their own weight, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5
\nThen<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> newborn tears supplied their places straight.
\nShe held a dagger, seemed with courage bold;
\nGrief bid her strike, but Fear did bid her hold.
\nImpatience raised her voice, and shrieking<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> shrill,
\nWhich sounded like a trumpet on a hill.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 10
\nHer face was flecked, like marble streaked with red,
\nCaused by grief\u2019s vapors flying to her head.
\nHer bosom bare, her garments loose and wide,
\nAnd in this posture lay by Death\u2019s cold side.
\nBy chance a man, who had a fluent tongue,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 15
\nCame walking by, seeing her lie along,
\nPitying<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> her sad condition and her grief,
\nDid strain<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> by rhet\u2019ric\u2019s<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> help, to give relief.
\n\u201cWhy do you mourn,\u201d said he, \u201cand thus complain,
\nSince grief will neither Death nor gods<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> restrain?\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 20
\nWhen they at first all creatures did create,
\nThey did them all<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span> to Death predestinate.
\nYour sorrow cannot alter their decree,
\nNor call back life by your impatiency.
\nNor can the dead from Love receive a heat,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 25
\nNor hear<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> the sound of lamentations great,
\nFor Death is stupid, being numb<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and cold,
\nNo ears to hear, nor eyes for<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> to behold.
\nThen mourn no more, since you no help can give,
\nTake pleasure in your beauty whilst<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span> you live,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 30
\nFor in the fairest Nature pleasure takes,
\nBut if you die, then Death his triumph makes.\u201d
\nAt last his words like keys unlocked her ears,
\nAnd then she straight considers what she hears.
\n\u201cPardon, you gods,\u201d said she, \u201cmy murm\u2019ring<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span> crime; \u00a0\u00a0 35
\nMy grief shall ne\u2019er dispute your will divine,
\nAnd in sweet life will I take most delight.\u201d
