Doubt round<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> the fort of Hope intrench\u00e8d<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> lay,
\nStopped all provisions that should pass that way,
\nDigging<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> forth earth to raise up rampires high;
\nAgainst Hope\u2019s curtains did their cannons<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> lie.
\nThe line being long, it seemed the weakest place,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5
\nOr else to batter down the frontier\u2019s face.
\nThere pioneers did dig a mine to spring,
\nBalls and grenados in the<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> fort did fling;
\nRams they did place, to beat their walls down flat,

\nAnd did set<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> ladders up the fort to take;
\nWhen Hope perceived,<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> great stones and weights down flung, 15
\nWhich many killed as they on ladders hung.
\nMany did fall, and in the ditch did lie,
\nBut then fresh men did straight their place supply.
\nUpon the walls of Hope many lay dead,
