A shady grove, where trees<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> in equal space
\nDid grow, seemed like<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> a consecrated place.
\nThrough spreading boughs the<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> quivering light broke in,
\nMuch like to glass or crystal shivered thin;
\nThose pieces small<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> on a green carpet strewed,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 5
\nSo in this wood the light all broken showed.
\nYet<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> this disturb\u00e8d light the grove did grace,
\nAs sadness doth a fair and beauteous face.
\nAnd in the midst an ancient oak stood there,

\nUnto this oak, that he should aged<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> live.
\nHis younger years, when acorns he did bear,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 15
\nNo dandruff moss, but fresh<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> green leaves grew there,
\nWhich curled hung down<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> his shoulders, broad they spread;
\nHis crown was thick, and bushy was his head,
\nHis stature tall, full breasted, broad, and big,

\nBut youth and beauty, which are shadows thin,
\nDo fade away as if they ne\u2019er had been.
\nFor all his fresh green leaves, and smooth moist rine<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nAre quite worn off, and now grown bald with time,<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span>

\nWhere he all times and seasons firm could<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span> stand,
\nAnd \u2019gainst all blust\u2019ring storms his face did bend,<\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nYet now so weak and feeble he<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span> doth grow,

\nThus time doth ruin, brings<\/span>23<\/sup><\/a><\/span> all to decay,
\nThough to the gods we<\/span>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span> still devoutly pray.
\nFor this old oak was sacred to high<\/span>25<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Jove,
