This temple is divided in two parts:
\nSome open lie, others obscure<\/span>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> as hearts;
\nSome light as day, others are<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> dark as night,
\nBy time\u2019s obscurity worn out of sight.
\nThe outward rooms are<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> glorious to the eye,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5
\nIn which Fame\u2019s image placed are<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> on high,
\nWhere<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> all the windows are triangulars cut,
\nWhere one face into millions is<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> put,
\nAnd builded is in squares, just like a cube,<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nWhich way to double, hard is in dispute.<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 10
\nEchoes therein do like as<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span> balls rebound
\nFrom every corner, making a great sound.
\nThe walls are hung with chapters<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> all of gold,
\nIn letters great all actions there are told.
\nThe temple door is of prospective glass,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 15
\nThrough which a small beam of our eye can pass.
\nThat<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> makes truth there so<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> difficult to know,
\nAs a new world in the bright moon<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span> to show.
\nThe steepl\u2019and pillars are<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span> of goose-quills built,
\nAnd plastered over with white paper gilt;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 20
\nThe painting is with ink as<\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span> black as jet,
\nIn several works and figures like a net.
\nThe steeple\u2019s high, and yet<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span> not very light,
\nBut as an<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span> evening is, \u2019twixt day and night.
\nFive tongues, the five bells through<\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span> the world do ring,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 25
\nAnd to each several ear much news do bring.
\nThe philosopher\u2019s tongue doth give a deep sound,<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nBut the historian\u2019s is no better found;<\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nTh\u2019orator\u2019s tongue doth make great noise; the sound<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nOf critics harsh, as full of flaws is found;<\/span>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span> \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 30
\nThe small bell, a poet\u2019s tongue, changes<\/span>23<\/sup><\/a><\/span> oft,
\nWhose motion is<\/span>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span> quick, smooth, even,<\/span>25<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and soft.
\nThe ropes they hang<\/span>26<\/sup><\/a><\/span> by, one cannot<\/span>27<\/sup><\/a><\/span> well see,
\nFor they are<\/span>28<\/sup><\/a><\/span> long small threads of vainglory.
\nAnd when they ring, they make a fine<\/span>29<\/sup><\/a><\/span> sweet chime,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 35
\nEspecially when poets\u2019 tongues do<\/span>30<\/sup><\/a><\/span> rhyme.
\nThe belfry-man\u2019s<\/span>31<\/sup><\/a><\/span> a printer by his skill,
\nWho,<\/span>32<\/sup><\/a><\/span> if he pleases, may ring when he will.
\nWhen priest to matins, or to vespers go,
\nTo the high altar they bow very<\/span>33<\/sup><\/a><\/span> low.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 40

\nIs made of brains, arms, and hearts, without<\/span>35<\/sup><\/a><\/span> blame,
\nOn which lies wisdom, wit, strength, courage, love,
\nAs<\/span>36<\/sup><\/a><\/span> sacrifices to great Fame<\/span>37<\/sup><\/a><\/span> above.
\nVertues, arts, sciences as priests here stand,<\/span>38<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 45

\nIncense of noble deeds to Fame she sends;

\nFor Fortune brings more into Fame\u2019s high court
