The shepherdesses which great flocks do keep
\nAre dabbled high with dew following their sheep,
\nMilking their ewes, their hands do<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> dirty make,
\nFor being<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> wet, dirt from their duggs do take.
\nThrough the sun\u2019s heat, their skin doth yellow grow;<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 5
\nTheir eyes are red, lips dry with winds<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> that blow.<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nThere shepherds sit on tops of mountains<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> high,
\nAnd<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span> on their feeding sheep do cast an eye,
\nWhich to the mount\u2019s steep sides they hanging feed
\nOn short moist grass,<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span> not suffered to bear seed.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 10
\nTheir feet are small, but strong each sinew\u2019s<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> string,
\nWhich makes<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span> them fast to rocks and mountains cling.
\nThe while the shepherd\u2019s legs hang dangling down,
\nHe<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> sets his breech upon the hill\u2019s high crown.
\nLike to<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span> a tanned hide, so is<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span> his skin;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 15
\nNo melting heat or numbing cold gets in,
\nAnd with a voice that\u2019s harsh against his throat,
\nHe strains to sing, yet knows not any note,
\nAnd, yawning, lazy<\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span> lies upon his side,
\nOr straight upon his back with<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span> arms spread wide,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 20
\nOr, snorting, sleeps, and dreams of Joan his<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span> maid,
\nOr of hobgoblins,<\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span> wakes as being afraid\u2014
\nMotion in his<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span> dull brains doth plow and sow,
\nNot plant and set, as skilfull gard\u2019ners<\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span> do\u2014
\nOr<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span> takes his knife half broke, but ground again,<\/span>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 25
\nAnd whittles sticks, his sheep-cote up to pin,<\/span>23<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nOr cuts some holes in straw, to pipe thereon
\nSome amorous tunes, which pleaseth his love Joan.<\/span>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nThus rustic clowns are pleased to spend their times,

\nWhen ladies scorn to dance without a court.

\nWith leather jerkins, breeches made of thrum,
\nAnd buskins made of frieze that\u2019s coarse and strong,

\nThose that are nicely bred fine clothes still love;
