The brain is the<\/span>2<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Elysian fields, for there<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nAll ghosts and spirits in strong dreams appear.
\nIn gloomy shades do sleepy lovers<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> walk,
\nAnd<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> souls do entertain themselves with talk,
\nAnd heroes their great actions do relate,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 5
\nTelling both their good fortune and<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span> sad fate,
\nWhat chanced to them when they awake<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span> did live,
\nTheir world the light did great Apollo give;
\nAnd what in life they could a pleasure call,
\nHere in these fields they pass their time withal,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 10
\nWhere Memory, the ferryman, with him<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nBrings<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span> company, which through the senses swim.
\nThe boat, imagination, \u2019s<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> always full,
\nWhich Charon roweth in the region skull,
\nIn which the famous river Styx doth flow,<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 15
\nWherein who\u2019s dipped, straight doth forgetful grow.<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nAnd<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span> this Elysium poets happy call,
\nWhere poets, as great gods, do record<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span> all
\nThe souls of those that<\/span>15<\/sup><\/a><\/span> they will choose for bliss,
\nAnd their sweet numbered verse their passport is.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 20
\nAnd<\/span>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span> those that strive this happy place to have<\/span>17<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nMust go to bed and sleep as in a grave.<\/span>18<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nYet what a stir do poets make, when they
\nBy their wit, Mercury, those souls convey!
\nBut what, cannot the godhead wit create,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 25
\nWhose fancies are both destiny and fate?<\/span>19<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nFame is<\/span>20<\/sup><\/a><\/span> the thread which long or<\/span>21<\/sup><\/a><\/span> short they spin;
\nThe world, as flax unto their distaff bring.<\/span>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nThis distaff spins fine canvas of conceit,
\nWherein the sense is woven ev\u2019n<\/span>23<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and straight; \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 30
\nBut if\u2019t<\/span>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span> in knots and snarls entangled be,
\nThe thread of fame doth run unevenly.
\nThose that care not to live in poets\u2019 verse,
