Nature most pleasure doth to poets give,

\nEach sense of theirs<\/span>3<\/sup><\/a><\/span> by fancy new is fed,
\nWhich fancy in a torrent brain is bred.
\nContrary \u2019tis<\/span>4<\/sup><\/a><\/span> to all that\u2019s born on Earth,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 5
\nFor fancy is delighted most at\u2019s birth.
\nWhatever else<\/span>5<\/sup><\/a><\/span> is born with pain comes forth,<\/span>6<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nHath neither beauty, strength, nor perfect growth.<\/span>7<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nBut fancy needs not time to make it grow;<\/span>8<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nThe brain\u2019s<\/span>9<\/sup><\/a><\/span> like gods, from whence all things do flow.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 10<\/p>\n

A garden they\u2019ve, which<\/span>10<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Paradise we call,<\/span>11<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nForbidden fruits, which tempt young lovers all,
\nGrow on the trees,<\/span>12<\/sup><\/a><\/span> which in the midst doth stand,<\/span>13<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nBeauty on one, desire on th\u2019other hand.<\/span>14<\/sup><\/a><\/span>

\nTwo rivers round this garden run about;
\nThe one is confidence, the other doubt.

\nWit raines upon them fine refreshing showers.
\nTruth is the lord and owner<\/span>22<\/sup><\/a><\/span> of this place,\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 25
\nBut ignorance this garden out will<\/span>23<\/sup><\/a><\/span> raze.<\/p>\n

Then, from this garden,<\/span>24<\/sup><\/a><\/span> to a forest goes,<\/span>25<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nWhere many cedars of high knowledge grow,<\/span>26<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nOaks of strong judgment, hazel wits<\/span>27<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u2014which tree
\nBears nuts full of conceits, when cracked they be\u2014 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 30
\nAnd smooth-tongued beech; kind-hearted willow<\/span>28<\/sup><\/a><\/span> bows
\nAnd yields to all that honesty allows.
\nHere<\/span>29<\/sup><\/a><\/span> birds of eloquence do sit and sing,
\nBuild nests of logic, reasons forth to bring.<\/span>30<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
\nSome birds of sophistry till hatched there lie;\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 35
\nWinged with false principles, away they fly.

\nUntil he weary grows, then leaves this place.<\/p>\n

\nWhose water clear doth flow with fancy\u2019s tide;<\/span>34<\/sup><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 40
\nAngles with wit to catch the fish of fame,
\nTo feed his mem\u2019ry<\/span>35<\/sup><\/a><\/span> and preserve his name.
\nShips of ambition he builds,<\/span>36<\/sup><\/a><\/span> swift and strong;
\nSails of imaginations drive \u2019em along,<\/span>37<\/sup><\/a><\/span>
